American Dream 8-31-11

In class this past Tuesday morning, August 30, 2011, we discussed the “American Dream” and what it meant to America itself. We touched on the various aspects of the “American Dream”. We explained what it meant now, in the past, what it means to the individual, and what it could mean in years to come. Many years ago that “dream” might have been having a car in your driveway and a television in your house. We came to the conclusion that overall, despite the many generations and the various time periods that have changed so many things, the “American Dream” means that we have freedom and in that freedom there is a possible promise that each individual is able to be successful and to prosper. It all boils down to, social and financial security can be earned by hard work and self reliance. What is puzzling about the “American Dream” is that it can sometimes lead many people astray. It makes the allusion that everyone is going to be successful if they work hard. Everyone has the capability to be successful and to follow their heart’s desires but that doesn’t always mean that the cards are in your hand. You might not always be able to achieve your wildest dream or become successful in every area that you had hoped to, no matter how hard you strive to reach the top. Being a follower of Christ, I believe that you do have the ability to do anything through Christ who strengthens us, just as the Bible says. Our dreams and aspirations might not always be those of our Heavenly Father.  At times we may be disappointed but in the end His dream for us is what will always be best. When you delight yourself in the Lord, your desires become His desires for you. In this instance, I feel like then and only then can the “American Dream” really and truly take place in an individual’s life.
